Hi, I am Francesca, one of the Concert Band conductors this year! Although being a string player primarily, I have played within Concert Band a number of times as a percussionist, acting as a guest conductor in their recent tour to Utrecht and one time an accidental soloist (ask about the triangle part in Stravinsky). There is the old joke that if you want to join an ensemble but can't play, they give you two sticks and send you to the back; and if you fail at that, they take one away and send you to the front! Therefore I decided there would be no harm in auditioning for conductor, which I succeeded in. I am currently in my final year studying a BA Music Degree, focusing on conducting and violin under Dr John Stringer and Lucy Baker (BBC Phil) - looking forward to a fun year with you all!

Hi, I'm Jake and I'm honoured to be conducting Concert Band this year! I'm currently doing the final year of my MMath Master of Mathematics at York, however I'm far from just a number nerd!
I am the president of the university's Triathlon club, but I also love music!
I grew up in Durham where I began to learn both saxophone and piano during school and quickly developed a taste for jazz and improvisation.
I joined Concert Band when I came to York in 2014 and have been an active member ever since, including managing the tour to Vienna in 2016 where we performed outside Schonbrunn Palace. Iceland hot springs, ice skating and bonding over ice-cold pints at V-Bar are only a few of my warmest memories, and now I'm looking forward to conducting some of my favourite music with my favourite people!
